How to choose a pet care business
Confirm the vet is licensed
Veterinarians must be licensed by your state's veterinary medical board, and most boards offer a free online license lookup. Also ask where the clinic sends after-hours emergencies, since many general practices do not offer overnight care.
Tour boarding and daycare first
Ask to see where dogs sleep and play, and check that the space is clean, secure and supervised. Ask how many dogs each staff member watches during group play and what happens if a dog gets hurt or sick.
Ask about vaccine requirements
Well-run groomers, boarders and daycares usually ask for proof of core vaccines, which helps protect every pet in their care. A business that asks for no records at all deserves a second look.
Ask trainers how they train
Dog training is generally not licensed, so ask about the trainer's education, any independent certification and how many years they have worked with dogs. Look for reward-based methods, and be cautious of anyone who promises a quick fix for behavior problems.
Get prices and policies in writing
Ask for an itemized estimate before any vet procedure, and ask groomers whether matting, nail trims or a nervous pet add fees. For boarding, check cancellation rules, pickup times and whether play time or giving medication costs extra.
What it typically costs
These are typical US ranges, and actual prices depend on your pet, the provider and local costs, so ask for a quote before you book.
Exam fees are higher at emergency hospitals, and vaccines, tests and medications are extra.
Size, coat type, matting and temperament all move the price, and large double-coated breeds cost the most.
Private suites, extra play sessions and holiday dates usually cost more.
Private lessons and board-and-train programs cost considerably more than group classes.
Common questions
How much does dog daycare cost in your area?
Dog daycare usually costs about $20 to $50 a day across the US, depending on the facility. Many places sell multi-day packages or monthly memberships that lower the daily rate. Call a few in your area for current prices and ask whether your dog needs a temperament test first.
How often should my dog be groomed?
Many dogs do well with professional grooming every four to eight weeks, though it depends on breed and coat. Dogs with long or curly coats usually need more frequent visits to prevent matting. Your groomer can suggest a schedule after the first appointment.
What vaccines do boarding kennels require?
Most boarding facilities ask for proof of rabies and distemper vaccines for dogs, and many also require bordetella, which protects against kennel cough. Requirements vary, so ask each facility well before your trip. Some want vaccines given at least several days before the stay.
Where can I find an emergency vet near your area?
Call your regular vet first, since many have a recorded message pointing to the nearest after-hours clinic. If you do not have a vet, look for a 24-hour or emergency animal hospital near your area and call ahead so they can prepare. Emergency visits usually cost more than a regular exam.
How do I know if a dog trainer is any good?
Ask how they train, what progress you can realistically expect and whether you can watch a class first. A good trainer explains their methods clearly, involves you in the training and does not promise overnight results. Independent certification is a plus, since dog training is generally not licensed.
How can I check a veterinarian's license?
Search your state veterinary medical board's website, which usually offers a free license lookup. It shows whether the license is active and may list any public disciplinary actions. The clinic should also be glad to tell you which vet will treat your pet.
